Welcome to my photography gallery on Zenfolio.

Eleven years ago, I developed an interest in photography after having moved to beautiful and scenic California. To my astonishment and delight, that interest has steadily burgeoned into a passion for imagery and art, so much so that photography is but one love of my life.

I am a self-taught photographer and consider myself a life-long student of photography in the classic tradition. During my primary career that I still hold, I am intensively studying and experimenting with the techniques of light manipulation and exploring artistic expressions to perpetually learn the art of photography. I am inspired by the timeless and incomparable work and teachings of Ansel Adams, the spirit and sense of adventure of Galen Rowell, and the masterful interplay of proximity and abstraction from Howard Bond, among other great photographers.

Fundamentally, I am inspired by the dynamic nature of light: the interplay of highlights, shadows, tonality, and color. I enjoy studying how these attributes define the mood, affect, and textures of a scene and captivate the imagination of the artist. In my mind and heart, I firmly believe that artistic vision, the light, and the skill of the photographer are paramount to visualizing the photograph and making it a reality.

Landscapes and travel photography have become the focus of my exploits thus far, but I am interested in pursuing fine art and portraiture work. Following years of exploration, introspection, and discovery, film has become my canvas and the view camera my paint brush.

I update this gallery monthly with new photographs. Please, I invite you to browse these images and leave your feedback. I appreciate constructive criticism on my work, which is an instrumental process to grow as an artist.

Thank you for your visit.

Rick

Rick Keller is an outdoors and hiking enthusiast and has a healthy and tremendous respect for nature, conservation, and the environment.

Even though Rick is trained as and remains employed as a physician, he hopes to gain more experience and opportunities in photography to explore aesthetics and creativity, refine his direction and skill, and expand his portfolio. He has authored numerous articles on light, visualization, composition, and technique.

After having started with a digital format, Rick photographs predominantly with film using various formats (8x10", 4x5", 6x7 cm, 6x4.5 cm, and 35mm). He enjoys color and black and white film; slide and print film; panchromatic and orthochromatic emulsions; and daylight-balanced, tungsten-balanced, infrared, and x-ray film.

Currently, Rick is in the midst of his journey into the realm of large format photography using both vintage and modern tools: Cherrywood and monorail view cameras; an assortment of plasmat, tessar, dialyte, double gauss, Dagor, and process lenses; and a sheet film scanner.

Guestbook for Rick Keller

Hi Rick: I discovered you and your articles on PhotoLife's Advanced Photography section
I believe I have learned a great deal about Visualization, Composition and much more.

I was a fairly accomplished film photographer in the 1970s and 80s but got to the point where I could not afford to continue. I piched up a bargain Nikon D 3000 Would you believe $4.95!!!) about 6 or 7 years ago and now at age 81, have not looked back since, reading and hopefully learning everyday.

Thanks for your writings. Len
