August 2013
Svínafellsjökull glacier, one of the mini "tongue" glaciers of the Vatnajökull glacier, which is the largest in Europe.
On my return visit to Iceland, this was my first major stop on my itinerary. For the past 3 months, I had been dreaming of getting a little closer to this glacier and re-living the mood and spell that it had cast upon me the first time in May.
Every time I see this glacier, I see it in black-and-white. Although the lighting was flat and there were cold drizzle and wind to endure, I relished every moment of it.
The next day, I returned here with the hopes of joining an organized glacier hike; alas, the weather did not cooperate, so I felt more comfortable taking a safer hike within nearby Skaftafell National Park, which was beautiful and enjoyable enough that day.
